ROOKIE is an initiative that takes place over several months, consisting of a contest for the most intriguing independent book project, a.k.a. art book (March-June 2012) and a festival aimed at presenting and promoting a wide survey of this particular culture of art publishing (December 2012).
Rookie is a word that refers to someone at the very start of their professional career, someone who doesn’t quite have all the experience required to make it in the ‘major league’. A Rookie isn’t quite an amateur, but he’s not yet a full-fledged player. He’s got confidence, but he’s still got to prove himself on the playing field.
Within the ROOKIE contest and festival, the word serves up a novel connotation, describing the young generation of independent publishers and the debut nature of the initiative itself as the very first edition. These Rookies – artists, curators, publishers, graphic designers – are professionals in their trade, collectively creating a new environment for the art book and driving its progress. The contest is now open for submissions. In the meantime, check out our blog for the latest ROOKIE news.
